From 2 to 9. A team that loses its first two games is out after two; the longest run is 9 games, for a team that drops early, wins its way through the losers bracket and then takes the grand final and the rematch.
When is game 19, the if-necessary final, played?
Only when the losers-bracket team wins game 18, the grand final. The winners-bracket champion then has its first loss too, so game 19 decides the 10-team title. If the winners-bracket team wins game 18, the tournament ends there.
How does the losers bracket fill up with 10 teams?
Every winners-bracket loser drops down: 2 teams after winners round 1, 4 after winners round 2, 2 after winners round 3 and 1 after the winners final. The 5 losers-bracket rounds whittle them to one team, which meets the unbeaten winners-bracket champion in the grand final.
