3-Game Guarantee Bracket
Every team plays at least three games. Ours is built on a double elimination bracket: any team that loses its first two games gets a third one, the guarantee game.
Double elimination
Everyone starts in the winners bracket. A first loss drops you to the losers bracket, a second one ends your run for the title.
Guarantee games
Lost your first two games? You get a third, the guarantee game, against another team that is out early.
Grand final
The two bracket winners meet. If the losers-bracket team wins, an if-necessary game decides the title.

How many teams?
How the guarantee games are set
A team that loses its first two games would go home after two. The guarantee adds a game for each of them, paired in the order their games end. With an odd number, the last one plays the loser of the next losers-bracket game.
With 4 teams, only the loser of G4 can be out after two games, so it meets the loser of G5, the losers final:
- Winners round 1: G1, seed 1 vs seed 4; G2, seed 2 vs seed 3.
- Winners final: G3, the winner of G1 vs the winner of G2.
- Losers round 1: G4, the loser of G1 vs the loser of G2.
- Losers final: G5, the winner of G4 vs the loser of G3.
- Guarantee game: G6, the loser of G4 vs the loser of G5.
- Grand final: G7, the winner of G3 vs the winner of G5.
- If-necessary game: G8, a rematch of G7, played only if the losers-bracket team wins it.
Where the rule comes from
Baseball tournaments use it. The tournament rules of the 2021 USSSA Fall State Championships, for example, put every division in a three-game guarantee bracket and tell teams that losing their first two bracket games still leaves another scheduled game in the losers bracket. That is the game this bracket adds.
Those rules also drop the if-necessary game. This bracket keeps it, so the losers-bracket team has to beat the unbeaten team twice. If your event plays one final, skip G16 on the 8-team sheet.

3-game guarantee or double elimination?
The guarantee costs very little. With 8 teams it adds 1 game to the 14 of double elimination, and on two fields with one-hour games it still takes 9 hours: the guarantee game fits in while the losers bracket plays on. A round robin guarantees more games, 7 each with 8 teams, but takes 28 games.

Games: without and with the if-necessary final. Hours: one-hour games on two fields, each starting as soon as a field is free and both teams are known, the way the bracket maker schedules them.
3-game guarantee questions
How many games is an 8-team 3-game guarantee?
15 or 16: the 14 games of double elimination, 15 with the if-necessary final, plus 1 guarantee game. With 8 teams only the two teams that lose in losers round 1 can be out after two games, so they play each other.
Does the guarantee game count toward the title?
No. Both teams in it are already out of the title bracket, and the winner does not move on. It is there so nobody goes home after only two games.
Can a team play more than three games?
Yes, three is the minimum. With 7 teams a team can play up to 7: lose in round 1, then win through the losers bracket, the grand final and the if-necessary game. And with an odd number of early exits, one of them meets the loser of the next losers-bracket game, who then plays a fourth.
